Help converting Sony 4k raw MXF to Avid Media Composer Avid DNxHD

Description: Sony PMW-F65 provides great 4K raw video quality, which is not supported by Avid Media Composer. To merge Sony F65 4K raw MXF footage to edit in Avid Media Composer 6.5,  Follow this guide to lean how to make this Avid Media Composer converter on Mac work.

Sony F65 grabbed attention with higher resolution than any previous digital motion picture camera. Plus extremely low noise, even in the blacks. Plus a wider color gamut than print film. Plus 16-bit linear RAW and 10-bit SR File recording. No wonder the F65 was quickly chosen for productions of every type. Now with Version 2.0, 2.2, and 3.0 refinements, the F65 does even more, including High Frame Rate RAW at up to 120p with no windowing. And 12-bit HD recording with 4:4:4 color.

However, while the Sony F65 provide high quality videos, the mxf files it outputs become larger and may encounter problems of trying to merge/edit F65 4K raw MXF in Avid Media Composer on mac.

To import Sony F65 4k raw MXF to Avid Media Composer on mac, you will need to transcode 4k raw MXF to Avid Media Composer preferred video format—Avid DNxHD files in mov suffix.

Here we would like to introduce an all-in-one Avid Media Composer converter — Aunsoft iMedia Converter for mac, it’s not only able to convert Sony 4k raw MXF to Avid Media Composer,

Below is a step-by-step tutorial to convert Sony F65 4k raw MXF to Avid DNxHD for Avid Media Composer editing.Let's take a look!

Step1: Load MXF files to Aunsoft iMedia Converter for Mac

Install and launch the Avid Media Composer converter, click ‘add videos’ to load individual videos, or click ‘add from folder’ to load the entire folder.

Step2: Choose Avid DNxHD (*.mov) as output formats

Click Format and choose Avid Media Composer>Avid DNxHD (*.mov), the best video format for Avid Media Composer.

Step3: Settings

I set video bitrates as high quality. But I get confused for a range of video frame rate, including 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60. I connected Aunsoft support email very soon, I got a good suggestion. I kept the frame rate as 24fps, a default value to guarantee high video quality.

Profile list made me easily compare the properties of source AVCHD progressive and target file when adjusting profiles.

Step4: Conversion

Click "Conversion" icon and the iMedia Converter for Mac will run at ultrafast speed. You can preview raw MXF and generated MOV when conversion completed. And with just a click on “Open output folder”, you can locate the output file.
